Good to know
Gross volume (litres) = length × width × height in cm ÷ 1,000. A 60 × 30 × 36 cm tank holds 64.8 litres when filled to the brim. With water 3 cm below the rim and 5 cm of gravel it holds about 54 litres of water.
Gravel and sand take up space but also hold water between the grains. The calculator counts about 40% of the gravel layer as water, a typical value for aquarium gravel. Rocks, wood and décor reduce the water further.
Water weighs about 1 kg per litre, so a 54 litre tank carries about 54 kg of water plus glass, gravel (about 1.6 kg per litre of gravel) and stand. Make sure the stand and floor can take it. Medicine and water-conditioner doses should follow the product label for the real water volume.
Questions
How many litres is a 2 feet fish tank?
A 24 × 12 × 12 inch tank is about 56 litres gross; a 24 × 12 × 15 inch tank is about 71 litres.
How do I calculate tank volume in litres?
Multiply length × width × height in cm and divide by 1,000.
Why is the water volume less than the tank volume?
The water level sits below the rim, and gravel and décor take up space.
How heavy is a full aquarium?
Water is about 1 kg per litre. Add the glass, gravel and stand for the total.
Should I measure inside or outside?
Inside, if you can. Outside sizes include the glass thickness and slightly overstate the volume.
