Good to know

NSC (VIII issue) from the Post Office pays 7.7% a year for October–December 2026, compounded yearly and paid only at maturity after 5 years. The rate on the day you buy stays fixed for the full 5 years. ₹1,000 grows to about ₹1,449.

Under the old tax regime the investment qualifies for the ₹1.5 lakh deduction (80C). The interest is taxable, but the interest for years 1 to 4 is treated as reinvested and also qualifies for the deduction; the 5th year's interest is taxed in the year of maturity.

There is no upper limit. Early encashment is allowed only in special cases such as the death of the holder or a court order. NSC can be pledged as security for a loan.
