An estimate at a steady speed. Wi-Fi, server limits and network load change real times.
Show working
- 2 GB = 1.6000 × 10^10 bit
- 100 Mbit/s
- 1.6000 × 10^10 ÷ 1.0000 × 10^8 = 160 s
How to use
- Enter the file size and pick MB, GB, TB, MiB or GiB.
- Enter your speed and pick Mbps, Gbps, kbps or MB/s.
- Optionally add an overhead to allow for real-world slowdown.
Good to know
Time = size in bits ÷ speed in bits per second. Internet plans are sold in megabits per second (Mbps), while file sizes are in megabytes (MB). 1 byte = 8 bits, so a 100 Mbps plan moves at most 12.5 MB per second.
Example: 2 GB = 16,000 megabits. At 100 Mbps that is 160 seconds = 2 min 40 s. A 50 GB game at 40 Mbps takes about 2 h 47 min.
Real speeds are lower than the plan because of Wi-Fi signal, network traffic, protocol overhead and the server's own limit. Add 10–15% overhead for a more realistic estimate; the result is still an estimate.
Questions
How long to download 1 GB at 100 Mbps?
8,000 Mb ÷ 100 Mbps = 80 seconds, plus any slowdown.
Is Mbps the same as MB/s?
No. MB/s is 8 times larger: 100 Mbps = 12.5 MB/s.
Why is my download slower than my plan?
Wi-Fi range, other devices, network load and server limits all reduce speed.
Does it work for uploads?
Yes. Use your upload speed, which is often lower than download on home plans.
Is anything I type sent to a server?
No. The conversion runs on your device and nothing is stored.
