How to use
- Measure the packed box: length, breadth and height in cm (or inches).
- Enter the actual weight on a scale, in kg.
- Pick the divisor your courier uses (5000 is most common) and see the chargeable weight.
Good to know
Volumetric weight (kg) = L × B × H in cm ÷ divisor. A 40 × 30 × 20 cm box is 24,000 cm³; ÷ 5000 = 4.8 kg. If it actually weighs 3.2 kg, the courier charges for 4.8 kg, rounded up to 5 kg on a 0.5 kg slab.
Most Indian couriers and marketplace shipping plans use a divisor of 5000 for express and air parcels. Some use 4000 (often for surface or certain services), which makes the volumetric weight higher. Check your courier's rate card and pick ‘Custom’ for any other divisor.
Measure the outer size of the packed box at its widest points, including bulges. To pay less, use the smallest box that fits safely, avoid oversized cartons and fill gaps with light padding. Rate cards and rounding rules differ, so treat this as an estimate.
Questions
What is volumetric weight?
A weight couriers calculate from the box size, because big light parcels take up space in vans and planes. It is L × B × H ÷ a divisor.
Which divisor should I use, 5000 or 4000?
Use the one on your courier's rate card. 5000 is the most common in India; 4000 gives a higher weight.
What is chargeable weight?
The higher of actual weight and volumetric weight, usually rounded up to the next 0.5 kg.
My box is in inches. Can I use it?
Yes. Choose inches and the calculator converts to cm (1 inch = 2.54 cm).
Is anything uploaded?
