kB, MB and GB use 1000 (SI, used by storage makers and most phones). KiB, MiB and GiB use 1024; Windows shows these as KB, MB and GB, which is why a 1 TB disk shows about 931 GB.
How to use
- Type the value in the From unit.
- Pick the unit to convert to (it starts on megabytes). Search by name or symbol.
- Read the result, or tap any row in the full table to switch the target unit.
Good to know
Two systems exist. SI (decimal): 1 kB = 1,000 bytes, 1 MB = 1,000 kB, 1 GB = 1,000 MB. IEC (binary): 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes, 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB, 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB. 1 byte = 8 bits.
Drive makers use decimal units, while Windows shows binary sizes but labels them KB, MB, GB. That is why a "1 TB" drive shows about 931 GB in Windows: 10¹² ÷ 1,024³ = 931.3.
For exam and form uploads, portals rarely say which KB they mean; staying under the limit in decimal KB (1,000 bytes) keeps you safe either way.
Questions
Is 1 GB 1000 MB or 1024 MB?
In SI units 1 GB = 1,000 MB. 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB. Windows calls GiB "GB", which causes the confusion.
Why does my 1 TB drive show 931 GB?
1 TB = 10¹² bytes = 931.3 GiB, and Windows labels GiB as GB.
How many bits are in a byte?
8 bits.
What is the difference between Mb and MB?
Mb (megabit) is used for internet speed; MB (megabyte) is 8 times bigger.
Is anything I type sent to a server?
No. The conversion runs on your device and nothing is stored.
