Tipping is voluntary. If the bill already has a service charge, you do not need to tip again.

How to use

  1. Enter the bill amount in rupees.
  2. Pick a tip percentage, for example 5% or 10%.
  3. Add the number of people and choose whether to round the total up.

Good to know

Tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100. On a ₹1,850 dinner bill, a 10% tip is ₹185 and the total becomes ₹2,035. Round up to the next ₹10 and you pay ₹2,040, a tip of ₹190.

Restaurant bills in India usually include 5% GST. Some people prefer to tip only on the food amount. Turn on ‘Tip on the amount before GST’ under More options: the calculator removes the GST part first (₹1,850 ÷ 1.05 = ₹1,761.90) and tips on that.

Tipping in India is voluntary. Under the Central Consumer Protection Authority guidelines of July 2022, a restaurant cannot add a service charge to your bill automatically. If a service charge is already on the bill, you do not need to tip again unless you want to.

Questions

How much should I tip in a restaurant in India?

There is no fixed rule. Many people leave 5–10% for good service, or round the bill up. It is your choice.

Is service charge mandatory in India?

No. CCPA guidelines (July 2022) say restaurants cannot add a service charge by default or force you to pay it. You can ask for it to be removed.

Should I tip on the amount with GST or without?

Either is fine. Tipping on the pre-GST amount is slightly lower. Use the ‘before GST’ option to see both.

How do I split the tip between friends?

Enter the number of people. The calculator shows each person's share of the total and of the tip.

Is my bill stored anywhere?

No. Everything is calculated on your device.
