Midpoint M
(5, 1)
- Length of AB
- 10
- AM = MB
- 5
Show working
- M = ((x₁ + x₂) / 2, (y₁ + y₂) / 2)
- xₘ = (2 + 8) / 2 = 5
- yₘ = (−3 + 5) / 2 = 1
How to use
- Choose "Midpoint" or "Endpoint".
- Enter the coordinates.
- Read the point, the segment length and the steps.
Good to know
The midpoint is the average of the coordinates: M = ((x₁ + x₂)/2, (y₁ + y₂)/2). It is the section formula with ratio 1 : 1, from NCERT Class 10 "Coordinate Geometry".
If you know end A and the midpoint M, the other end is B = (2xₘ − x₁, 2yₘ − y₁). This is how you find the fourth vertex of a parallelogram, because its diagonals bisect each other.
The segment length is also shown, so you can check the midpoint splits AB into two equal halves.
Questions
What is the midpoint formula?
M = ((x₁ + x₂)/2, (y₁ + y₂)/2).
What is the midpoint of (2, −3) and (8, 5)?
((2 + 8)/2, (−3 + 5)/2) = (5, 1).
How do I find an endpoint from the midpoint?
Double the midpoint and subtract the known end: x₂ = 2xₘ − x₁, y₂ = 2yₘ − y₁.
How do I find the fourth vertex of a parallelogram?
The diagonals share a midpoint. Find the midpoint of AC, then the endpoint D from B and that midpoint.
