Asian Indian waist cut-off for men: 90 cm (35.4 in).

How to use

  1. Choose male or female and the unit.
  2. Measure your waist and the widest part of your hips.
  3. Read the ratio and the waist check.

Good to know

Ratio = waist ÷ hips. The WHO Expert Consultation on waist measures (2008) links a ratio of 0.90 or more in men and 0.85 or more in women with substantially increased risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

Waist alone also matters. For Asian Indians the cut-offs are 90 cm (35.4 in) for men and 80 cm (31.5 in) for women (WHO Western Pacific 2000; Indian consensus statement, 2009). These are lower than the 102/88 cm used for Europeans.

Measure the waist midway between the lowest rib and the top of the hip bone, and the hips around the widest part of the buttocks, standing relaxed. Not for pregnancy.

Questions

What is a normal waist-to-hip ratio?

Below 0.90 for men and below 0.85 for women, per WHO.

What is the healthy waist size for Indian men and women?

Under 90 cm (about 35 in) for men and under 80 cm (about 31.5 in) for women.

My ratio is fine but my waist is above 90 cm. Is that a concern?

Yes, it can be. Either measure above its cut-off suggests more belly fat. Talk to a doctor about a check-up.

Which is better, waist-to-hip or waist-to-height?

Both work. Waist-to-height is simpler as it has one cut-off (0.5) for everyone.

Is my data stored?

No. Everything is calculated on your device.
