Answer (simplest form)
17/12
- Mixed number
- 1 5/12
- Exact decimal
- 1.41(6)
- Decimal (rounded)
- 1.416667
Digits in brackets repeat for ever: 0.(3) = 0.333…
Show working
- LCM(4, 3) = 12
- 3/4 = 9/12, 2/3 = 8/12
- 9/12 + 8/12 = 17/12
- 17/12 = 1 5/12
How to use
- Type the first fraction: 3/4, a mixed number like 1 1/2 (with a space), a whole number or a decimal.
- Choose +, −, × or ÷ and type the second fraction.
- Read the simplified answer, the mixed number and the decimal, and follow the steps.
Good to know
To add or subtract, the calculator uses the LCM of the denominators (the lowest common denominator), rewrites both fractions over it, then adds or subtracts the numerators: 3/4 + 2/3 = 9/12 + 8/12 = 17/12. To multiply, it multiplies the tops and the bottoms; to divide, it multiplies by the reciprocal (flips the second fraction).
Every answer is reduced to lowest terms by dividing top and bottom by their HCF, then shown as a mixed number when it is more than 1 (17/12 = 1 5/12). The exact decimal marks repeating digits in brackets: 1/3 = 0.(3), 1/6 = 0.1(6), 22/7 = 3.(142857).
Arithmetic is exact (whole-number numerators and denominators of any size), so there is no rounding until the last decimal row. Negative fractions work: type −3/4 or 3/−4. This follows the method taught in NCERT Classes 6–8.
Questions
How do I add fractions with different denominators?
Find the LCM of the denominators, convert each fraction to that denominator, then add the numerators. 1/4 + 1/6: LCM is 12, so 3/12 + 2/12 = 5/12.
How do I divide fractions?
Keep the first, change ÷ to ×, and flip the second: 3/4 ÷ 2/3 = 3/4 × 3/2 = 9/8 = 1 1/8.
How do I type a mixed number?
Whole part, a space, then the fraction: 2 1/3. The mixed number calculator also converts between mixed and improper fractions.
What does 0.(3) mean?
The digits in brackets repeat for ever. 0.(3) is 0.3333… and 0.(142857) repeats those six digits.
Can I use decimals?
Yes. 0.75 is read as 3/4 exactly, so 0.75 + 1/3 = 13/12.
