Good to know
Grams = volume in ml × density of the ingredient. 1 cup is 240 ml (US cup) or 250 ml (metric cup), 1 tablespoon is 15 ml and 1 teaspoon is 5 ml. So 2 cups of atta (480 ml × about 0.5 g/ml) weigh about 240 g, and 1 teaspoon of salt is about 6 g.
Approximate grams in one 240 ml cup: atta 120 g, maida 125 g, besan 92 g, sooji 168 g, raw rice 185 g, sugar 200 g, salt 288 g, ghee 218 g, oil 218 g, butter 228 g, milk 247 g, curd 245 g, honey 341 g, water 240 g. These are based on USDA household weights.
These values are approximate. Flour weighs more when it is packed or scooped and less when it is sifted, and grain size changes the weight of rice, sugar and salt. For baking, a kitchen scale is more reliable than cups.
Questions
How many grams is 1 cup of atta?
About 120 g in a 240 ml cup, or 125 g in a 250 ml cup, if spooned in and levelled.
How many grams of sugar are in 1 tablespoon?
About 12–13 g of granulated sugar.
Is an Indian cup 240 ml or 250 ml?
Both are used. Many measuring-cup sets sold in India are 250 ml; many online recipes use the 240 ml US cup. Pick the one your recipe uses.
How many grams is 1 teaspoon of salt?
About 6 g of fine table salt. Coarse salt weighs less per spoon.
