Good to know
Indian Guidelines on Hypertension IV (2019) keep high blood pressure at 140/90 and above: optimal below 120/80, normal 120–129/80–84, high-normal 130–139/85–89, grade 1 140–159/90–99, grade 2 160–179/100–109, grade 3 from 180/110. The US ACC/AHA guideline (2017, kept in 2025) uses lower cut-offs: normal below 120/80, elevated 120–129 with diastolic under 80, stage 1 130–139 or 80–89, stage 2 from 140 or 90.
The category is set by the higher of the two numbers. For example 145/85 is grade 1 (isolated systolic hypertension) on Indian guidelines and stage 2 on ACC/AHA. Pulse pressure is the gap between the numbers; mean arterial pressure is diastolic + one third of that gap.
One reading is not a diagnosis. BP changes through the day and is often higher at a clinic. Doctors diagnose hypertension from repeated readings on different days or home monitoring. Any reading of 180/120 or above needs prompt attention, and urgent care if you have symptoms. Categories checked against the 2019 Indian guidelines and the 2025 AHA/ACC guideline on 27 Oct 2026.
Questions
What is normal blood pressure for Indians?
Under Indian guidelines, below 120/80 is optimal and 120–129/80–84 is normal. Hypertension starts at 140/90.
Is 130/85 high?
It is "high-normal" on Indian guidelines and stage 1 on ACC/AHA. It is a sign to cut salt, stay active and recheck regularly.
Why do the two standards give different answers?
The ACC/AHA guideline labels hypertension from 130/80, while Indian guidelines keep 140/90. Your doctor will decide which to follow for you.
What if my BP is 180/120 or higher?
Rest 5 minutes and measure again. If it stays that high, or you have chest pain, breathlessness, severe headache, weakness or vision changes, get medical care immediately.
How should I measure BP at home?
Use a validated upper-arm machine, sit with back supported and feet flat, arm at heart level, no tea, coffee or smoking for 30 minutes before. Take two readings a minute apart.
