Good to know
An emergency fund covers job loss, a medical bill not covered by insurance or an urgent repair without breaking investments or borrowing. Count only must-pay costs: rent, food, utilities, school fees, EMIs and insurance premiums, not holidays or shopping.
Six months of expenses suits most salaried households. Keep 9–12 months if your income is irregular, you are self-employed, or you are the only earner with dependants. Health insurance reduces how much you need but does not replace the fund.
Keep the money safe and quick to reach: a savings account, a sweep-in FD or a liquid fund. Equity, PPF or long FDs with penalties are not suitable. Rebuild the fund as soon as you use it.
Questions
How much emergency fund do I need?
Usually 6 months of essential expenses including EMIs. 9–12 months for irregular income or a single-income family.
Where should I keep my emergency fund?
Savings account, sweep FD or liquid mutual fund: safe, and available within a day.
Should I invest my emergency fund in equity?
No. It may be down exactly when you need the money.
Do I need one if I have a credit card?
Yes. Credit card debt costs around 36%–42% a year and is not a safe backup.
