Work Rate Calculator: Time and Work, A and B Together

Enter how long each person takes alone. See how long they take together, each person's share of the work and the worked solution.

Time working together

6days

A's share of work
60%
B's share of work
40%

Together they finish 16.67% of the job per day or hour.

Show working
  1. A: 1/10, B: 1/15
  2. 1/10 + 1/15 = 3/30 + 2/30 = 5/30 = 1/6
  3. T = 6/1 = 6

How to use

  1. Choose days or hours.
  2. Enter the time A and B each take to finish the job alone. Add C if there is a third person.
  3. Read the time together, each share and the fraction steps.

Good to know

Each person's rate is 1 ÷ their time. Together: 1/T = 1/a + 1/b. If A takes 10 days and B takes 15, then 1/10 + 1/15 = 3/30 + 2/30 = 5/30 = 1/6, so together they take 6 days.

Work is shared in proportion to speed: in those 6 days A does 6/10 = 60% of the job and B does 40%. This is how wages are split in ‘A and B together earn ₹…’ questions in SSC, bank and railway exams.

The calculator assumes each person works at a steady rate and does not slow the others down. Real projects have hand-offs and breaks, so use it for estimates and practice problems.

Questions

What is the formula for A and B working together?

Time together = (a × b) ÷ (a + b) for two people. With 10 and 15 days: 150 ÷ 25 = 6 days.

How do I add a third person?

Enter C's time. The formula becomes 1/T = 1/a + 1/b + 1/c.

How is the work or wage shared?

In proportion to each person's rate. The shares are shown as percentages.

Can I use hours instead of days?

Yes. Choose hours; the formula is the same.

What about a pipe filling and another emptying a tank?

That needs a minus sign for the emptying pipe, which this tool does not do. Use 1/T = 1/a − 1/b by hand.
