BODMAS Calculator: Order of Operations with Steps

Type a sum with brackets, powers and × ÷ + −. The calculator works it out one operation at a time, the way your teacher wants it written.

Answer

37

Operations worked out
5
Read as
18 ÷ 3 × 2 + (8 − 3)^2

Order: brackets → powers and roots → × and ÷ from left to right → + and − from left to right.

Show working
  1. 18 ÷ 3 × 2 + (8 − 3)^2
  2. = 18 ÷ 3 × 2 + 5^2
  3. = 18 ÷ 3 × 2 + 25
  4. = 6 × 2 + 25
  5. = 12 + 25
  6. = 37

How to use

  1. Type the expression, e.g. 18 ÷ 3 × 2 + (8 − 3)^2. You can use * and / too.
  2. Read the answer.
  3. Follow the steps: each line does exactly one operation.

Good to know

BODMAS stands for Brackets, Orders (powers and roots), Division and Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction. Division and multiplication have the same rank and are done from left to right, as are addition and subtraction. So 18 ÷ 3 × 2 = 6 × 2 = 12, not 18 ÷ 6 = 3. PEMDAS (used in the US) is the same rule with different words.

Each step here works out one operation: the innermost brackets first, then powers and roots, then × and ÷ from the left, then + and − from the left. Negative results inside a step keep their brackets, e.g. 3 × (−3). Supported: + − × ÷ ^, brackets, √, ∛, %, ! and functions like sin, log and ln (angles in degrees by default; change under More options).

Some Indian textbooks put 'of' (as in 1/2 of 10) before division. This calculator has no 'of' key: type it as × and add brackets if it must go first, e.g. 20 ÷ (1/2 × 8). Viral puzzles like 8 ÷ 2(2 + 2) are ambiguous because people read implied multiplication differently; this calculator treats it like ×, giving 16.

Questions

What is the full form of BODMAS?

Brackets, Orders, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction.

Is division done before multiplication?

No. They have equal rank and are worked from left to right. 12 ÷ 3 × 2 = 4 × 2 = 8.

What is 8 ÷ 2 × (2 + 2)?

Brackets first: 8 ÷ 2 × 4. Then left to right: 4 × 4 = 16.

Is −3² equal to 9 or −9?

−9. The power is applied before the minus sign. Write (−3)² for 9.

Which brackets can I use?

Round, square and curly brackets all work: {2 + [3 × (4 − 1)]} = 11.
