Good to know
Your corpus grows like a SIP: contributions at the start of each month, compounding monthly at the expected return. Actual NPS returns depend on the fund manager and your asset mix, and are not guaranteed.
Under the PFRDA exit regulations amended in December 2025, non-government subscribers must use at least 20% of the corpus to buy an annuity and can take up to 80% as a lump sum; government-sector subscribers must annuitise at least 40%. A corpus of ₹8 lakh or less can be withdrawn in full.
The pension is estimated as annuity amount × annuity rate ÷ 12. Annuity rates are set by insurers and depend on the plan and your age, often 5.5%–7%. Up to 60% of the corpus is tax-free; the annuity income is taxable.
Questions
How much pension will I get from NPS?
It depends on the corpus, the share you put into an annuity and the annuity rate. ₹5,000 a month from 30 to 60 at 10% gives about ₹1.14 crore; 40% at 6% annuity is about ₹22,800 a month.
What is the minimum annuity in NPS?
20% for non-government subscribers and 40% for government-sector subscribers, under the December 2025 rules.
Is the NPS lump sum tax-free?
Up to 60% of the corpus is tax-free; any extra lump sum allowed under the new rules is taxable.
Can I continue NPS after 60?
Yes, you can defer exit and keep contributing up to the age limits PFRDA allows.
