- Enter how many servings the recipe makes and how many you need.
- Paste the ingredient list, one ingredient per line, with the quantity first.
- Read the scaled list. Lines without a number, like ‘salt to taste’, stay as they are.
Good to know
Scale factor = servings you need ÷ servings in the recipe. Going from 4 to 10 is × 2.5, so 2 cups rice becomes 5 cups, 1 1/2 tbsp ginger-garlic paste becomes 3 3/4 tbsp and 500 g chicken becomes 1250 g.
The calculator reads the number at the start of each line: whole numbers, decimals (1.5), fractions (1/2), mixed numbers (1 1/2), symbols like ½ and ¼, and ranges like 3-4. Results are shown as fractions a home cook can measure (1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 3/4) when close, otherwise to one decimal.
Use judgement for some items. Round eggs and onions to whole numbers. Salt, chilli and whole spices often need less than a straight multiply when you make a very large batch — add them gradually and taste. Cooking time and pot size also change with big batches.
Questions
How do I double a recipe?
Set the new servings to twice the original, for example 4 → 8. Every quantity is multiplied by 2.
Which quantity formats does it understand?
2, 1.5, 1/2, 1 1/2, ½, 1½ and ranges like 3-4 or 2 to 3 at the start of a line.
What happens to ‘salt to taste’?
Lines without a number at the start are kept unchanged.
Should I scale spices exactly?
For big batches, start with a little less salt and spice than the full multiple, then adjust to taste.
