  1. Σx = 12 + 15 + 11 + 15 + 18 + 20 + 9 = 100
  2. x̄ = 100 ÷ 7 = 14.28571429
  3. ↑ 9, 11, 12, 15, 15, 18, 20
  4. Median = x(4) = 15
  5. Mode = 15 (× 2)
  6. Range = 20 − 9 = 11

How to use

  1. Type or paste your numbers into the box, separated by commas, spaces or new lines.
  2. Read the average (mean) at the top and the median, mode, range and count below.
  3. Open the steps to see the sum, the sorted list and how each value was found.

Good to know

Mean = sum of the values ÷ how many there are. Median = the middle value after sorting (the average of the two middle values when the count is even). Mode = the value that appears most often; there can be more than one, or none. Range = largest − smallest.

Which one to use: the mean uses every value but is pulled by extreme values; the median is better for incomes or house prices where a few very large numbers distort the mean; the mode suits the most common shoe size or the most frequent marks.

Paste a column straight from a spreadsheet: new lines work as separators. Don't use thousand separators inside numbers (type 12000, not 12,000), because commas split the list. For averages where some values count more, such as marks with credits, use a weighted average instead.

Questions

How do I calculate an average?

Add all the numbers and divide by how many there are. 12, 15 and 18: 45 ÷ 3 = 15.

How do I find the median of an even number of values?

Sort them and take the average of the two middle ones. For 2, 4, 7, 9 the median is (4 + 7) ÷ 2 = 5.5.

What if no number repeats?

Then there is no mode. If two or more numbers share the highest count, each of them is a mode.

Can I find my average marks with this?

Yes, type the marks of each subject. If subjects have different credits or maximum marks, a weighted average or percentage calculation is more accurate.

Are negative numbers and decimals allowed?

Yes, for example −3.5, 2.25 or 1e3. Up to 10,000 values at a time.
