Good to know
"Characters" counts every Unicode character including spaces and line breaks; "without spaces" leaves out spaces, tabs and line breaks. Most emoji count as one character; combined emoji (like a family) count as several. Bytes (UTF-8) matter for databases and some APIs: an English letter is 1 byte, a Hindi letter 3 bytes.
For Hindi, a visible letter can be several characters: कि is क + ि (2 characters). We also show "Hindi letters" (akshar) so you can see both. Websites and apps differ in which one they count, so check the platform's own counter for strict limits.
The limits are common ones: 160 characters for one SMS in English (Hindi SMS allow only 70 because they use Unicode), 280 for an X (Twitter) post, 2,200 for an Instagram caption. Search engines show roughly 150–160 characters of a meta description.
Questions
Are spaces counted as characters?
Yes in "Characters"; "Characters (no spaces)" leaves them out.
Why is my Hindi SMS limit 70?
Hindi needs Unicode SMS, which fits 70 characters instead of 160.
Does an emoji count as one character?
Usually yes here; some platforms count certain emoji as two.
What is the bytes count for?
Database fields and some APIs limit bytes, not characters.
Is my text uploaded?
No. It is counted in your browser.
