Data Matrix Generator: Free Data Matrix and GS1 DataMatrix Codes
Data Matrix packs a lot of data into a tiny square, which is why it is printed on medicines, electronic parts and medical devices. Type your text or GS1 data and download a crisp code.
- Works on your device. Nothing is uploaded.
- Free, no watermark
- No signup
How to use
- Type your text, serial number or link, or pick GS1 DataMatrix and type AIs in brackets, e.g. (01)…(17)…(10)….
- Choose the cell size (module width) for your printer and keep the quiet zone.
- Download PNG, SVG or a PDF label; the scan check confirms it reads.
Good to know
One Data Matrix can hold up to about 2,300 characters or 3,100 digits, with strong error correction so it still reads if part of it is damaged.
GS1 DataMatrix is required for many pharmaceutical exports and track-and-trace schemes: GTIN (01), expiry (17), batch (10) and serial (21). Real EAN/UPC/GTIN numbers must be licensed from GS1 India (or your country's GS1 office). This tool only draws the barcode for a number you already own; it does not issue numbers.
The rectangular version fits narrow spaces such as the edge of a carton or a cable label.
Questions
Data Matrix or QR code?
QR is better for phones and links. Data Matrix is smaller for the same data and is the industry standard for parts, medicines and devices.
Can a phone read Data Matrix?
Most phone camera apps read QR only; use a scanner app or our barcode scanner page, which reads Data Matrix.
Does it support Hindi?
Yes, plain Data Matrix stores UTF-8 text, so Hindi works. GS1 DataMatrix is limited to the GS1 character set.
What size should I print?
For small labels a 0.25–0.5 mm cell is common; bigger cells scan from further away.
Is my data uploaded?
No. The code is made and checked in your browser.
