How to use

  1. Enter your height in cm or feet and inches.
  2. Optionally enter your current weight.
  3. Pick Indian or WHO cut-offs.

Good to know

Range = BMI limit × (height in metres)². The lower end uses BMI 18.5. The upper end uses 22.9 on Indian (Asian) cut-offs or 24.9 on WHO cut-offs.

Indian guidelines (consensus statement, Misra et al., 2009) use lower cut-offs because South Asians tend to carry more body fat and get diabetes and heart disease at a lower BMI than Europeans.

The range is for adults. It does not separate muscle from fat, so very muscular people may sit above it while healthy. Not for children or pregnancy.

Questions

What is the healthy weight for 5 feet 4 inches?

At 162.6 cm the Indian range is 48.9 to 60.5 kg. The WHO range goes up to 65.8 kg.

Why is the Indian range lower than WHO?

Studies show Indians develop diabetes and heart risk at a lower BMI. So overweight starts at 23 instead of 25.

Is the bottom of the range a good target?

Not necessarily. Anywhere in the range is fine. Very near 18.5 may be too thin for some people.

Does age change the range?

This range is for adults of all ages. Older adults may be advised to stay in the middle or upper part of it to protect muscle.
