Good to know

The formulas: X% of Y = X ÷ 100 × Y. X as a percentage of Y = X ÷ Y × 100. Percentage change from X to Y = (Y − X) ÷ X × 100. Increasing X by Y% = X × (1 + Y ÷ 100); decreasing = X × (1 − Y ÷ 100).

Everyday uses in India: marks percentage (marks obtained ÷ total × 100, e.g. 423 out of 500 = 84.6%), GST (18% of ₹2,500 = ₹450), discounts (₹1,999 less 30%) and salary hikes (₹40,000 increased by 8%). For CGPA to percentage use the dedicated calculator, since boards and universities use their own formula.

A percentage change is always measured from the starting value, so going from 400 to 500 is +25%, but going back from 500 to 400 is −20%. Two changes don't simply add: +10% then −10% leaves you at 99% of where you started.

Questions

How do I calculate the percentage of marks?

Divide the marks you got by the total marks and multiply by 100. For 423 out of 500: 423 ÷ 500 × 100 = 84.6%. Choose 'X is what % of Y?' and type 423 and 500.

What is 15% of 2,000?

15 ÷ 100 × 2,000 = 300.

How do I find the percentage increase?

Subtract the old value from the new one, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. From ₹40,000 to ₹46,000: 6,000 ÷ 40,000 × 100 = 15%.

Is X% of Y the same as Y% of X?

Yes. 8% of 50 and 50% of 8 are both 4, because both are X × Y ÷ 100. This trick makes some sums easy to do in your head.

How do I remove 18% GST from a price that includes it?

Divide by 1.18, not subtract 18%. ₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000. The percentage change calculator has a 'value before a % change' mode for this.
