Good to know
Speed = distance ÷ time, distance = speed × time, and time = distance ÷ speed. A 150 km drive at an average 60 km/h takes 150 ÷ 60 = 2.5 hours, which is 2 hours 30 minutes.
To convert km/h to m/s, divide by 3.6 (multiply by 5/18) — the shortcut used in school and competitive-exam questions. 72 km/h = 20 m/s. Pace (minutes per km) is 60 ÷ speed, useful for runners and walkers.
Real journeys rarely hold one speed. Use average speed for trips: total distance ÷ total time, including stops. On Indian highways an average of 50–60 km/h is realistic even when the speed limit is higher.
Questions
What is the formula for speed?
Speed = distance ÷ time. 150 km in 2.5 hours is 60 km/h.
How do I convert km/h to m/s?
Multiply by 5/18, or divide by 3.6. For example 90 km/h = 25 m/s.
How do I enter 1 hour 45 minutes?
Put 1 in hours and 45 in minutes. The calculator converts it to 1.75 hours.
What is average speed?
Total distance divided by total time taken, including stops. It is not the average of the speeds.
Is this useful for exams?
Yes. It shows the worked step, so you can check answers to time–speed–distance questions.
