Good to know

PPF interest is 7.1% a year for 1 October to 31 December 2026, unchanged since April 2020; the Government reviews it every quarter. Interest is worked out on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of each month and added once a year, so depositing by 5 April earns interest on the full amount for the year.

The account matures after 15 full financial years from the end of the year you opened it, and can then be extended in blocks of 5 years, with or without fresh deposits. Partial withdrawals are allowed from the 7th financial year and loans from the 3rd to the 6th.

PPF is fully tax-free on maturity and the interest is tax-free. Deposits count for the ₹1.5 lakh deduction (80C) under the old tax regime. ₹1.5 lakh a year for 15 years at 7.1% grows to about ₹40.68 lakh.
