How to use

  1. Enter the hours worked and the normal hours for the same period (e.g. a week: 48).
  2. Enter an hourly rate, or a monthly salary with working days and hours per day.
  3. Choose the overtime rate: 2× (default), 1.5× or 1×.

Good to know

Overtime pay = (hours worked − normal hours) × hourly rate × multiplier. From a monthly salary, the hourly rate here is salary ÷ (working days × hours per day), such as ₹26,000 ÷ (26 × 8) = ₹125.

Under the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020 (in force from 21 November 2025), work beyond 8 hours a day or 48 hours a week must be paid at twice the ordinary rate of wages (as of 27 Oct 2026). State rules and your appointment letter decide the exact daily limit and which allowances count as "ordinary wages".

This is an estimate for planning. It does not include tax, PF or ESI deductions, night-shift allowances or company-specific overtime policies. Check your payslip and HR policy.

Questions

How is overtime calculated in India?

Extra hours beyond the normal limit × your ordinary hourly wage × 2. The labour codes require at least twice the ordinary rate for workers covered by them.

How do I find my hourly rate from a monthly salary?

Divide the monthly salary by working days and then by hours per day. ₹30,000 for 26 days of 8 hours is about ₹144 an hour.

What are normal working hours in India?

Generally up to 8 hours a day and 48 hours a week under the labour codes, with state rules for spread-over and rest. Your contract may set fewer hours.

Why can I choose 1.5×?

Some employers and countries use time-and-a-half. Use the rate that applies to you; the legal minimum for covered workers in India is 2×.

Does this include tax or PF?

No. It shows gross overtime pay before any deductions.
