Ratio Calculator

Four ratio tools in one: simplify, find the missing term, share an amount, and scale up or down.

Simplest form

2 : 3

As a fraction (A/B)
2/3
As 1 : n
1 : 1.5
As percentages
40% : 60%
Show working
  1. HCF(12, 18) = 6
  2. 12 ÷ 6 : 18 ÷ 6 = 2 : 3

How to use

  1. Choose Simplify, A:B = C:?, Divide or Scale.
  2. Type the ratio terms, and the third term, amount or factor if asked.
  3. Read the answer and the working.

Good to know

Simplify divides both terms by their HCF: 12 : 18 → HCF 6 → 2 : 3. Decimal ratios are first multiplied by a power of 10 to make whole numbers: 0.5 : 1.25 = 50 : 125 = 2 : 5. The result is also shown as a fraction, as 1 : n and as a percentage split.

A:B = C:? uses cross-multiplication: the missing term = B × C ÷ A. Divide shares an amount: each part = amount × its term ÷ (sum of terms). ₹1,000 in the ratio 2 : 3 is ₹400 and ₹600. Scale multiplies both terms by the same number, which keeps the ratio the same.

Everyday uses: splitting profit between partners, recipe quantities, map scales, mixing cement and sand (1 : 4), and NCERT ratio and proportion questions. A ratio has no units, but both terms must be in the same unit before you compare them (convert 50 paise : ₹2 to 50 : 200 first).

Questions

How do I simplify a ratio?

Divide both terms by their highest common factor. 24 : 36 → HCF 12 → 2 : 3.

How do I divide ₹5,000 in the ratio 2 : 3?

Add the terms (5), then ₹5,000 × 2/5 = ₹2,000 and ₹5,000 × 3/5 = ₹3,000.

How do I find the missing number in a ratio?

Cross-multiply. If 3 : 4 = 9 : x, then 3x = 36, so x = 12.

Can a ratio have decimals?

Yes, but it is usually written with whole numbers. Multiply both sides by 10, 100… and then simplify.

Is 2 : 3 the same as 3 : 2?

No. Order matters: 2 : 3 means the first quantity is two-thirds of the second.
