Body Frame Size Calculator (Wrist Method)

Measure around your wrist and enter it with your height to see whether your frame is small, medium or large.

Height ÷ wrist

Medium frame
Wrist size for a medium frame
16.3–17.7 cm

An estimate for general information, not medical advice.

Method: height ÷ wrist (Grant, 1980). A rough guide only.

How to use

  1. Choose male or female and enter height.
  2. Measure your wrist just below the wrist bone.
  3. Read your frame size.

Good to know

Frame size uses r = height (cm) ÷ wrist circumference (cm) (Grant, 1980). Men: small if r is above 10.4, medium 9.6–10.4, large below 9.6. Women: small above 11.0, medium 10.1–11.0, large below 10.1.

Measure the wrist on the side you write with, just below (towards the hand from) the bony bump, with the tape snug but not tight.

Frame size is a rough guide for reading ideal weight tables: people with a large frame may sit near the top of the healthy range and small frames near the bottom. It does not change the healthy BMI range itself.

Questions

How do I know my body frame size?

Divide your height in cm by your wrist size in cm, or just use this calculator.

What wrist size is a medium frame?

It depends on height. For a 170 cm man, about 16.3–17.7 cm. For a 160 cm woman, about 14.5–15.8 cm.

Does a large frame mean I can weigh more?

A little: you may be healthy near the top of your BMI range. It does not justify a weight above the range.

Is there another way to measure frame?

Elbow breadth with a caliper is another method, but the wrist is easiest at home.

Is my data stored?

No. Everything is calculated on your device.
