Good to know
Letters: I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1000. A smaller letter before a larger one is subtracted: IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, XC = 90, CD = 400, CM = 900. The standard form never repeats a letter more than three times.
Above 3,999, a bar on top (vinculum) multiplies a letter by 1,000: V̅ = 5,000, X̅ = 10,000, M̅ = 1,000,000. This converter uses the bar for the thousands part from 4,000 up, so 4,000 = I̅V̅ and the maximum is 3,999,999.
Non-standard forms such as IIII (seen on clock faces) are still read, and the standard form is shown. There is no Roman numeral for zero or negative numbers.
Questions
What is 2026 in Roman numerals?
MMXXVI (2000 = MM, 20 = XX, 6 = VI).
How do you write 4,000 in Roman numerals?
With a bar: I̅V̅. Some older texts write MMMM, but that is not standard.
Why is 4 written IV and not IIII?
The subtractive rule keeps numerals short. Clocks often use IIII for visual balance.
Is there a Roman numeral for zero?
No. The Romans had no numeral for zero.
Is anything I type sent to a server?
No. The conversion runs on your device and nothing is stored.
