  1. 2¹⁰ = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2
  2. = 1,024

How to use

  1. Type the base (b), for example 2.
  2. Type the exponent (n), for example 10, −3 or 0.5.
  3. Read the answer, the digit count and the steps.

Good to know

bⁿ means b multiplied by itself n times: 2⁵ = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 32. A negative exponent means 1 divided by the power: 2⁻³ = 1 ÷ 2³ = 1/8 = 0.125. A fractional exponent is a root: 9^0.5 = √9 = 3 and 8^(1/3) = ∛8 = 2. Any non-zero number to the power 0 is 1.

For whole-number bases and exponents the calculator uses exact whole-number arithmetic, so 2^100 shows all 31 of its digits in the steps (1267650600 2282294014 9670320537 6). Answers with more than 15 digits are also shown rounded in scientific notation. Other powers use standard floating point, accurate to about 15 significant digits.

Laws of exponents: bᵐ × bⁿ = bᵐ⁺ⁿ, bᵐ ÷ bⁿ = bᵐ⁻ⁿ, (bᵐ)ⁿ = bᵐⁿ and (ab)ⁿ = aⁿbⁿ. A negative base with a fractional exponent such as (−4)^0.5 has no real answer, and 0 to a negative power is undefined, so you'll see a clear message instead of a wrong number.

Questions

What is 2 to the power 10?

1,024. It is why a kilobyte is sometimes counted as 1,024 bytes.

What does a negative exponent mean?

Take the reciprocal: 10⁻² = 1 ÷ 10² = 0.01.

What is any number to the power 0?

1, for any non-zero base. 0⁰ is usually taken as 1 in algebra, which is what this calculator shows.

How do I calculate a square root with exponents?

Use the exponent 0.5: 49^0.5 = 7. For a cube root use 1/3 (≈ 0.333333), or use the root calculators.

How many digits does 2^1000 have?

302. Type 2 and 1000 to see them all.
