How to use

  1. Enter the number of people at home.
  2. Choose bucket or shower bath and adjust toilet, kitchen and laundry habits.
  3. See litres per day and compare per-person use with the 135 litre norm.

Good to know

The total adds up each activity: bathing (buckets × bucket size, or shower minutes × flow), toilet (flushes × cistern size), taps for brushing and washing hands, cooking and drinking, washing dishes, laundry (spread over the week), mopping and the garden.

The comparison line is 135 litres per person per day, the figure used by the CPHEEO Manual on Water Supply (Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs) for Indian cities with piped water and sewerage. Towns without sewerage plan for about 70 litres.

The biggest savings usually come from the toilet and bathing. A dual-flush cistern (3/6 litres) instead of an old 10–12 litre one, a bucket bath instead of a long shower, and fixing a leaking tap (a slow drip can waste several litres a day) all help. All figures are estimates.
