Good to know
Tariffs differ by state, DISCOM, connection type and year, so the default slabs are only an example. Copy the slabs printed on your bill or your DISCOM’s tariff order: each line is the upper limit of a slab and its rate, and the last line “+, rate” covers all remaining units.
Telescopic billing (most states) charges each slab at its own rate: 250 units on the example slabs = 100 × ₹3 + 100 × ₹4.50 + 50 × ₹6 = ₹1,050. Some tariffs instead charge all units at the rate of the slab you reach; choose “Whole bill at one rate” for those.
Fixed or demand charge is added per bill. Fuel surcharge (FPPCA/FAC) is per unit. Electricity duty is taken as a percentage of energy and fuel charges; some states charge it per unit or on the whole bill, and subsidies are not included, so your bill can differ.
Questions
How are units calculated from meter readings?
Units = current reading − previous reading. One unit is one kWh.
Where do I find my tariff slabs?
On the back of your bill or your DISCOM / state electricity regulatory commission website (tariff order).
What is telescopic billing?
Each block of units is charged at its own rate, so only the units above a limit pay the higher rate.
My bill is two-monthly. What do I enter?
Enter the units for the two months and the slabs exactly as printed on the bill (they are usually doubled for bimonthly billing).
Why does my real bill differ?
State subsidies, minimum charges, meter rent, rebates and rounding are not included. Use it as an estimate.
