Good to know
BMI = weight in kg ÷ (height in metres)². It is a quick screening number for adults, not a diagnosis.
Indian guidelines use lower cut-offs than WHO because South Asians tend to carry more body fat at the same BMI: overweight from 23 and obese from 25.
BMI does not tell muscle from fat, so athletes may read high. It is not meant for children, pregnancy or older adults with muscle loss. Talk to a doctor about your health.
Questions
What is a healthy BMI for Indians?
18.5 to 22.9 on Indian (Asian) cut-offs. WHO uses 18.5 to 24.9.
How is BMI calculated?
Weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. For example, 65 kg at 1.70 m gives 65 ÷ 2.89 = 22.5.
Is BMI accurate?
It is a rough screening tool. It does not measure body fat or where fat is stored. Waist size and a doctor's check give a fuller picture.
Can children use this?
No. Children and teenagers need age- and sex-specific BMI charts.
Is my data stored?
No. Everything is calculated on your device.
