How to use

  1. Choose male or female.
  2. Enter your height in cm or in feet and inches.
  3. Compare the four formulas and the healthy BMI range under them.

Good to know

Each formula starts at a base weight for 5 feet (152.4 cm) and adds a fixed amount for every extra inch. Devine (1974): men 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch, women 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg. Robinson (1983): men 52 + 1.9, women 49 + 1.7. Miller (1983): men 56.2 + 1.41, women 53.1 + 1.36. Hamwi (1964): men 48 + 2.7, women 45.5 + 2.2.

These formulas were made for drug and nutrition planning in Western hospitals, not as body goals. They ignore age, muscle and frame size, so treat the average as a rough middle point. For Indians, the healthy BMI range of 18.5 to 22.9 (Asian cut-offs) gives a fairer range for your height.

The formulas are least reliable below 5 feet, where they can give very low numbers. Not for children, pregnancy or athletes with a lot of muscle.

Questions

What is the ideal weight for 5 feet 6 inches?

For a man the four formulas give about 63–65 kg; for a woman about 59–61 kg. On Indian BMI cut-offs the healthy range at 5 ft 6 in (167.6 cm) is 52.0 to 64.4 kg.

Which ideal weight formula is the most accurate?

None is "accurate" for an individual. Devine is the most widely used in hospitals; Robinson and Miller were later refits of similar data. The healthy BMI range is a better everyday guide.

Why are the four results different?

They were fitted to different data sets with different base weights and per-inch steps, so they agree near average height and drift apart for short or tall people.

Should I aim for exactly this weight?

No. Any weight inside your healthy range can be right for you. Waist size, fitness and blood tests matter more than one number.

Is my data stored?

No. Everything is calculated on your device.
