Good to know

Adjusted body weight = IBW + 0.4 × (actual weight − IBW). Ideal body weight (IBW) uses the Devine formula: men 50 kg, women 45.5 kg, plus 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet.

Dietitians often use adjusted weight instead of actual weight to estimate energy and protein needs when actual weight is above about 120% of ideal, because extra body fat needs fewer calories and less protein than lean tissue.

If your weight is at or below ideal, adjusted weight equals your actual weight. This page is not for medicine doses; those are set by your doctor or pharmacist.

Questions

When is adjusted body weight used?

Mainly in nutrition planning for people whose weight is more than about 120% of ideal body weight.

Why 40%?

It is a long-standing rule of thumb that roughly 40% of the excess weight is metabolically active. Some clinics use 25%; 40% is the most common.

Can I use this for drug dosing?

No. Some medicines use adjusted weight, but the choice and the dose must come from your care team.

Should I use it in a calorie calculator?

Our calorie calculators use your actual weight with Mifflin-St Jeor, which was tested on people of all sizes. Use adjusted weight only if your dietitian asks you to.

Is my data stored?

No. Everything is calculated on your device.
