Good to know
FY 2026-27 is the first "tax year" under the Income-tax Act, 2025, which applies from 1 April 2026. Union Budget 2026 kept the rates unchanged. New regime: nil up to ₹4 lakh, then 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% in ₹4 lakh steps, and 30% above ₹24 lakh. Old regime: nil up to ₹2.5 lakh (₹3 lakh at 60+, ₹5 lakh at 80+), 5% to ₹5 lakh, 20% to ₹10 lakh, 30% above.
Salaried people get a standard deduction of ₹75,000 in the new regime and ₹50,000 in the old one. The rebate (section 156 of the 2025 Act, earlier 87A) makes tax nil up to ₹12 lakh of taxable income in the new regime and ₹5 lakh in the old, with marginal relief just above ₹12 lakh. Surcharge starts above ₹50 lakh (new regime capped at 25%), and 4% health and education cess applies to everything.
This page treats all income at normal slab rates. Capital gains, lottery income, agricultural income and special cases are not included; use the capital gains calculator for share and property gains. Rates checked on 27 Oct 2026 against incometaxindia.gov.in and Budget 2026 coverage. The calculator is waiting for a CA review, so treat the result as an estimate.
Questions
Which regime is better for me?
If your deductions (80C, 80D, HRA, home-loan interest and so on) are small, the new regime usually costs less. With large deductions the old regime can win. Enter your real numbers and compare the two totals.
Is income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free in FY 2026-27?
In the new regime, yes, if your taxable income after the standard deduction is ₹12 lakh or less, thanks to the rebate. For a salaried person that means a salary of about ₹12.75 lakh. Special-rate income such as capital gains is treated separately.
What changed with the Income-tax Act, 2025?
From 1 April 2026 the new Act replaces the 1961 Act and uses "tax year" instead of previous year and assessment year. Section numbers changed (for example the rebate is now section 156), but the FY 2026-27 rates stayed the same.
Does it include surcharge and cess?
Yes. Surcharge of 10%, 15%, 25% (and 37% in the old regime above ₹5 crore) with marginal relief, and 4% cess on tax plus surcharge.
Can I file my return with this number?
No. It is an estimate for planning, not tax advice. Your Form 16, AIS and a CA give the final figure.
